Easy and Quick Ribbed Cowl Knit Multi-Wear

Cowls are everywhere!  I must admit, I'm addicted to cowls.  This knitted ribbed cowl adds style and drama no matter where you're going.  You can wear it multiple ways to suit the fashionista in you (I've shown seven different ways to wear it in the photos, but I'm sure there are more!).

The finished knitted item is one size fits most and stretches so there is lots of room.  The knitting pattern uses large straight needles and chunky yarn or two medium weight yarns held together, so you know that it will knit up in no time!  Try it with a variety of big wooden, gold, metal, or fun bright buttons.

Easy Cheese Muffin Recipe

Mmmmmmmuffins!  I remember back in the day when I was a kid going inside a mall to a bakery shop named exactly that and all they sold were muffins.  That was the first time I ever tasted a cheese muffin, and every time I make these it brings back a bit of nostalgia.

Anyways, enough of me whining about days gone by.  Now it's time to pass along new memories to my kids! Hopefully, your sweeties will fall in love with this muffin too!  I based the recipe off of a basic muffin recipe and just added in the cheese.  You can try many flavours with this all-purpose recipe like blueberries, nuts, banana, etc. etc. etc.  Yummers!

Best Crumb Cake Recipe Cakeboss Inspired Createry Styled

So for this Thanksgiving I thought about making that famous Cakeboss crumb cake that everyone has seen on one of their episodes (remember the one where that lady drove all the way from who know where to get an order of crumb cake that was to die for?).

Well, I searched for the recipe and could not find it.  Then I ran into a book called "America's test kitchen" and their was a New York Style crumb cake that I sure was going to be a hit.  Then life took over and I lost the recipe.  Soooo.... after many crumb cake recipes and test tries I finally nailed down my own recipe for crumb cake.  It's light, buttery, sweet, and got that bit of caramelized butter and brown sugar flavour.  Dense enough to cut and pick up, but lightly crumbs in your mouth after a bite.  Distinctively 2 layered, you can serve as is but I added some brown sugar glaze drizzle on top and powdered sugar for flair!  Enjoy all you cake lovers out there!

The Createry Shop's Best Crumb Cake Recipe
Cake Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of butter, unsalted at room temperature
- 1 cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup of buttermilk
- 2 cups of cake flour
- 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract

Crumb Topping Ingredients:
- 3/4 cups of butter, chilled
- 1/2 cup of white sugar
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups of cake flour
- 3 teaspoons of cinnamon powder

Directions:
Cake:
1) Beat sugar and room temperature butter together until smooth.
2) Add eggs, milk, vanilla.
3) Slowly add in cake flour and mix well.
4) Line a 9x13 inch size pan with parchment paper or grease pan (I like parchment paper but to each their own)
5) Pour batter into a pan (I use a 9x13 pan), set aside.

Topping:
6) In a bowl, use a cheese grater and grate the chilled butter into this bowl.
7) Add cake flour and lightly toss mixture around, careful not to overmix.
8) Add white and brown sugar and lightly mix.
9) sprinkle this on top of the cake batter.
10) Bake at 350 degrees F. for 40 minutes.
11) Cool and top as desired!

Easy Baby Booties Knit On Straight Needles

Easy Baby Booties To Knit On Straight Needles - A Collection from The Createry Shop

Ahhh, it just brings a smile to my face when I see some cute knitted baby booties!  I have been getting lots of responses from people who just want an easy baby booties knitting pattern on straight needles that they can quickly finish (especially if they are new to knitting, or taking care of a little one).  I realize that most (if not all) of my knitting patterns are done using only straight needles and nothing else, so I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to finding a good simple pattern for just 2 sticks (sometimes it's just not worth the fuss of a lot of knitting knick-knacks).

Anyways, I thought I would post a collection of my knit baby booties completed  on straight needles only.  Here are the links to get my knitting patterns, some for sale and some for free, enjoy!

Double Diamond Edge Ice Cream Sweater For Baby

I know, I haven't been posting too many things up lately. However, it doesn't mean I haven't been knitting my keester off! I've been trying out new ideas and coming up with new patterns while keeping up with the rest of my life and the summer months just seem jammed packed with endless events and chores.

Anyways, here is a photo of what I call my "Ice Cream Sweater" simply because the yarn I chose for it by Loops and Threads in medium weight is called Neapolitan. I don't normally use multi-colored yarn, but this sweet mixture of yummy yarn was to delicious to ignore. The pattern is a heavily modified vesion of the pattern I will publish. I chose a double diamond edging which, in the end, was confusing as hell to type out as a pattern. I promise, I will share the edge pattern as soon as I can finalize my sweater pattern in writing! Stay tuned on that note...

Dark Banana Bread Recipe - For That Richly Moist Dark Brown Color!

When I go to a cafe and order a yummy slice of banana bread it is always so richly dark in color and very very moist. Of course I could never replicate this at home. My banana bread was too pale, too bread-like, and too dry to even come close to something "store-bought". So if you are like me in search of a banana bread that is dark in color and moist too, here is my tried-tested-true recipe for you!

Recipe Yield: 1 loaf

Dry ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp baking soda
A pinch of table salt

Wet ingredients:
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 1/2 cups very very ripe bananas, the more ripe the better!  This is approximately 5 large bananas or 8 small ones I think.

Directions:
1) Mash or puree the bananas.  You can also mash the bananas a day before and put them in the fridge for later.  I usually try to make more pureed bananas so I can measure out what I need to make my banana bread and then the rest save it for my baby food.
2) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease one standard loaf pan (9" x 5" x 3"depth).
3) Mix all dry ingredients together making sure the brown sugar is evenly distributed (no big clumps!).
4) Add all wet ingredients and mix together (just til all the wet and dry ingredients come together smoothly, don't over mix it).
5) Pour into greased loaf pan and bake for 1 hour. Poke a skewer through the loaf and see if it comes out clean to ensure it is completely baked through.
6) Remove loaf pan and let it cool for 10 minutes before removing banana bread from pan. Cut and serve.

Footnotes:
Optional ingredients to add are 1 cup crushed walnuts, chocolate chips, or blueberries. You can check out more of my recipes on my website thecreateryshop.com. Enjoy!

Wilton Fondant and Gum Paste Molds - An Initial Review

Hello crafty people out there!  Wilton has recently come out with some brand new products for us cake makers and decorators.  Specifically, I'm talking about the PCD tools (Punch, Cut, Decorate) tools and the fondant and gum paste molds (which you see in the photo above).

At first when I went down the aisle of my usual hobby store I noticed they had shifted everything around and I couldn't find a thing.  Then I saw all these plastic purple do-dads with the classic Wilton seal on them and thought "What the hell are these things?"  After a few minutes of perusing (ok, ok, I can peruse for hours!) I determined that Wilton wanted to get on the band wagon of mixing paper crafting with cake making... and they are about 2 seasons too late in my opinion.

Wilton's PCD tools are basically taking a shape punch to a scrapbook paper sheet, except it's a sugar sheet.  Now if their sugar sheets are anything like Cricut's icing sheets, ohhhh boy, prepare to be frustrated.  Since I haven't worked with any of the PCD tools, I can't say much about them.  Only that I didn't get that gasp of excitement when I saw them (or when I saw finished cake examples using PCD tools either).

On the bright side, seems like the cake world is loving these new fondant and gum paste molds.  I am looking forward to trying them out, one thing to remember is to lightly dust the molds to prevent the fondant from sticking and tearing.  Some of the details are quite....detailed.  Then again, I remember awhile ago I was using a chocolate mold and fondant to create a 3D shape...ahhh, similar but different I guess.

Tip:  To make sure your fondant or gumpaste doesn't stick to the mold, dust the mold with cornstarch first before you press your material in them.  You will probably need to re-dust every time.

Children's 1st Birthday Cake - Gumpaste Daisies and Chocolate Ribbons

Children's Birthday Cake - Daisies and Chocolate Ribbon
I found these wonderful ejector cutters for gum paste and fondant that add a bit of embossing onto your shape.  They are very easy to handle and a nice alternative to smooth simple shapes cut out from regular fondant or gum paste shape cutters.  Plus, you can get really sharp pieces with them, unlike if you are using regular cutters.

Tip: roll your gumpaste out very thin and be careful when you handle they cut out shape, they are quite delicate!
Hopefully you can see the embossing on the daisy petals.

The inside of the cake is a chocolate layer on top of a white layer cake.  Pink buttercream inside and outside finish is pink buttercream as well.  Daisies are gum paste and ribbons are chocolate fondant.  For the small daisies I had to make a separate batch of yellow icing to pipe the yellow centres in.  Voila!

Baby Spring Lamb With Cherry Blossom Tree Cake and Recipe for Not Too Sweet Buttercream Icing

Ahhh, my little girl is all grown up.  Already a year has gone by and I must admit it was infinitely easier than my first child.  Maybe it was the fact that I knew what to expect this time around, or maybe I just got used to the sound of crying babies.  Anyways, I'm sure nobody wants to hear a blog post of how sappy a mom can get about her children growing up!

This cake was a lemon cake with lemon filling, covered with white buttercream and decorated with fondant.  The Lamb was made out of chocolate melted into a 3D mold.  Heavy little thing too!  I was worried it would sink the cake in.

What To Do With Store Bought Icing That Is WAY Too Sweet?

I love cake icing that is not too sweet, like cakes that you buy with whipped cream instead of buttercream are like heaven to me.  But I have found many (if not all?) store bought icings and frostings are just way way way too sweet!  I normally use Wilton's Icing but have found that if I use that inside and outside the cake it's just too sugary for my taste.  So I make my own:

Buttercream Icing That's Not Too Sweet!
- 1 cup of vegetable shortening, room temperature
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 2 Tbsp Vanilla Extract
- 2 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar
- 4 Tbsp whole milk

1) With an electric mixing, mix shortening and butter together until smooth.
2) Add sugar slowly into mix while still beating.
3) Add the rest of the ingredients and mix at medium speed for about 2 minutes or until smooth.
4) Keep at room temperature if you are going to work with it.  Refrigerate in an air-tight container and re-whip when you need to use it.

Happy Baking!

Spring Butterfly Garden Birthday Cake

Here is my latest cake!  2 tiers, 7 inch on top of a 10 inch, with a layer of yellow cake and a layer of pink cake.  Inside is all buttercream and outside is pale yellow fondant with fondant dots.

I made the butterflies out of gum paste and piped the green grass icing last.  I would say the toughest thing about this cake was when it left my home to be celebrated with.  Ahh, I shouldn't get so attached to my cakes!  Happy Birthday Anaya!

Strawberry Baby Bottle Cozy - Free Knitting Pattern

Here is a cute little project you can do that is quick and easy, especially if you are a beginner knitter and want to tackle a knitting pattern that isn't very time consuming.  It's a strawberry baby bottle cozy that fits a standard 8 oz. baby bottle.  Sometimes when I just need to do a quick run to the store and have to bring my baby with me, I don't want to have to carry a diaper bag or a thick thermo bag.  With this cozy I just warm up a bottle, put it in the cozy and throw it in my handbag and away we go!  BTW, whenever I pull this baby bottle cozy out, it gets a lot of smiles from mommies and babies.

Some ideas of variations of this pattern: Make it in purple instead of red for an eggplant!

Materials:
(I hold 2 strands of yarn together when knitting this)
- Yarn, medium weight (#4), in red
- Yarn, medium weight (#4), in green
- 5.0mm (US8) straight knitting needles
- Yarn needle
- 16 inch long decorative ribbon
Gauge: Not important for this project

Notes: Because I wanted to achieve a thicker knit, I held 2 strands together while knitting. Fits a standard 8 oz. baby bottle.

Knitting Pattern:
1) With Green and holding 2 strands together, CO 28 sts.
2) RS: *K2, P2, repeat * to end.
3) Repeat step ‘2’ five more times.
4) RS: K2, *K1,YO, K2tog, repeat* to last 2 sts, K2.
5) P row.
Switch to red yarn and holding 2 strands together,
6) RS: *K3, P1, repeat * to end.
7) P row.
8) K row.
9) P row.
10) K1, P1, *K3, P1, repeat * to last 2 sts, K2.
11) P row.
12) K row.
13) P row.
14) Repeat steps ‘6’ to ‘13’ until piece measures 9 inches from beginning edge, ending on a RS.
15) WS: K row.
16) *K2tog, repeat * to end. (14 sts)
17) P row.
18) K row.
19) P row.
20) *K2tog, repeat * to end. (7 sts)
21) Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to seam edges of piece together. With a yarn needle and yarn tail, thread through all remaining sts and pull tight. Fold piece in half with WS facing outwards and seam edges together.
22) With decorative ribbon, thread ribbon through eyelets to create a drawstring tie.
