Spring Butterfly Garden Birthday Cake

Here is my latest cake!  2 tiers, 7 inch on top of a 10 inch, with a layer of yellow cake and a layer of pink cake.  Inside is all buttercream and outside is pale yellow fondant with fondant dots.

I made the butterflies out of gum paste and piped the green grass icing last.  I would say the toughest thing about this cake was when it left my home to be celebrated with.  Ahh, I shouldn't get so attached to my cakes!  Happy Birthday Anaya!

Strawberry Baby Bottle Cozy - Free Knitting Pattern

Here is a cute little project you can do that is quick and easy, especially if you are a beginner knitter and want to tackle a knitting pattern that isn't very time consuming.  It's a strawberry baby bottle cozy that fits a standard 8 oz. baby bottle.  Sometimes when I just need to do a quick run to the store and have to bring my baby with me, I don't want to have to carry a diaper bag or a thick thermo bag.  With this cozy I just warm up a bottle, put it in the cozy and throw it in my handbag and away we go!  BTW, whenever I pull this baby bottle cozy out, it gets a lot of smiles from mommies and babies.

Some ideas of variations of this pattern: Make it in purple instead of red for an eggplant!

Materials:
(I hold 2 strands of yarn together when knitting this)
- Yarn, medium weight (#4), in red
- Yarn, medium weight (#4), in green
- 5.0mm (US8) straight knitting needles
- Yarn needle
- 16 inch long decorative ribbon
Gauge: Not important for this project

Notes: Because I wanted to achieve a thicker knit, I held 2 strands together while knitting. Fits a standard 8 oz. baby bottle.

Knitting Pattern:
1) With Green and holding 2 strands together, CO 28 sts.
2) RS: *K2, P2, repeat * to end.
3) Repeat step ‘2’ five more times.
4) RS: K2, *K1,YO, K2tog, repeat* to last 2 sts, K2.
5) P row.
Switch to red yarn and holding 2 strands together,
6) RS: *K3, P1, repeat * to end.
7) P row.
8) K row.
9) P row.
10) K1, P1, *K3, P1, repeat * to last 2 sts, K2.
11) P row.
12) K row.
13) P row.
14) Repeat steps ‘6’ to ‘13’ until piece measures 9 inches from beginning edge, ending on a RS.
15) WS: K row.
16) *K2tog, repeat * to end. (14 sts)
17) P row.
18) K row.
19) P row.
20) *K2tog, repeat * to end. (7 sts)
21) Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to seam edges of piece together. With a yarn needle and yarn tail, thread through all remaining sts and pull tight. Fold piece in half with WS facing outwards and seam edges together.
22) With decorative ribbon, thread ribbon through eyelets to create a drawstring tie.

Make an Xbox 360 Controller Cake

Here it is! My Xbox 360 Controller Cake! The cake itself is a classic white cake with a layer of cream cheese icing and sliced peaches in the middle. The outside of the cake is covered in white buttercream and the accessories are all made out of fondant. It was tough trying to make this cake with only pictures since we didn't actually have an xbox controller anymore, but it turned out great anyways!  I found a great site that had instructions on how to make an xbox cake which helped me so much in taking on this project!  You can check it out at:   http://zasinzebra.com/2009/04/03/how-to-create-an-xbox-cake/

First I baked two 9x13 inch rectangular cakes, iced the middle and layered them.  Then I took an image of the xbox controller as a template and carefully cut out the shape.  If you scroll down you will see a jpg image that I used for the xbox 360 controller template.  I copied and pasted the jpg image into Word, set the page to landscape, and expanded the image to fit the entire 8.5"x11" size page.  This fits pretty good with the cake size I used.

I printed and cut out the image and used a knife to start shaping the cake.  I had to use skewers to keep the paper in place!

Iced the cake with buttercream and let it sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

Fondant pieces. All the buttons were cut using cookie cutters. The smaller pieces I had to use the circles in some letter cutters I had.  The actual 'X' dome I used a tablespoon-size measuring spoon and stuffed it with white fondant and used 2 green strips of fondant to form the "X". I used the end of a skewer to poke out 4 dots on the grey buttons.  You can't see it in the photo but I used a knife to etch out a triangle 'play' symbol on the little white buttons.

I then added 2 rectangular fondant pieces on the top as buttons. For the front piece with the name I rolled out grey fondant and cut out a 10 inch by 2 inch high rectangle and used circle cookie cutters to round out the edges. Don't forget the white rings around the buttons and the grey ring around the 'X' dome. This adds a bit more detail and realness to the look. I then piped white icing for the letters on the buttons.

Xbox 360 controller template image.
I pasted this image on a word document, 8.5x11 standard letter size in landscape, then stretched the image out to fit the entire page.  This will fit a 9x13 cake pan.
